During World War II, the US Navy and Coast Guard were tasked with ruining the days of any and every Nazi submarine they could find, but those underwater dongs of death were notorious for staying hidden until they spied a convoy of merchant ships and oil tankers moving on their own. The Navy purchased used
merchant vessels, mostly oil tankers, and converted them for wartime service. Anti-submarine weapons were cleverly hid across the deck while the holds were filled with additional ammunition as well as watertight barrels to provide additional buoyancy after a torpedo strike. These were derivative of a World War I and World War II practice pioneered by the British, who built decoy "Queen Ships" for the same purpose.
